Training on KOHA LMS was Conducted
SPHMMC Library organized and conducted a KOHA Library Management System and Greenstone Digital Library System training for its library staffs. Koha is a full-featured open-source integrated library system (ILS) developed initially in New Zealand by Katipo Communications Ltd and first deployed in January 2000 for Horowhenua Library Trust. The system is currently maintained by a team of software providers and library technology staff from around the globe and are in use in most academic libraries throughout the world. Besides the KOHA ILS, the training also covered Greenstone digital library software. The library currently holds 5000 e-book collections on medicine and related fields which will be deployed and be accessible online soon through the Greenstone digital library system. The Greenstone Digital Library software was chosen for its simplicity to use and presents collections for viewing in a web browser. In addition to this, the server installation allows for easy publishing on the web, and it is customizable system.
The training which was geared towards imparting skills of using both systems were provided by Library professionals from Addis Ababa University Library and lasted for 8 days. It was believed that the training equipped the staffs with necessary skills required for day to day library related activities.
With strong commitment of the Library Director, SPHMMC management especially unreserved support of the provost and vice provost offices and full support of experts from Addis Ababa University Library, the KOHA ILS and Greenstone Digital library systems are now on the way to be in use at SPHMMC Library.
