About Research Directorate

SPHMMC was established with three core purposes: providing health care services, training health professionals, and conducting need-based research. Since its establishment, the College has been committed to providing comprehensive, integrated and quality services. In addition to  the remarkable progress in health care service and the training of undergraduate and postgraduate students, undergraduate medical students undergo a rural community attachment for six weeks where they receive experience with community research (with the support of teaching staff), interventions and recommendations based on their assessment. They also complete an individual research thesis in their last year.

Research at the College is undertaken by both students and staff members. The academic staff members are expected to devote 20% of their working time to research and related tasks.

Students carry out research in partial fulfillment of the requirements of their degree. There are currently no forums such as the annual Research Day for the staff members and students to present research output at the College level; hence this first annual Research Day is an opening for the future, for the bringing out and revealing of different research works of the College faculty.

The College established a Research Publication Unit two years back. Cognizant of the need ,it was necessary to establish a strong Research Directorate in order to guide and manage the research activities of the College. St Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College Research Resource Mobilization and Project Management Directorate (RRMPD) opened one year back.

Though there is still significant room for improvement in research undertakings, progress has been documented over the last year and a half. The Directorate is working towards the improvement of the research culture of the College, and strengthening the existing Institutional Review Board of the College. In order to expand the scope and capacity of research projects, St. Paul’s encourages team-based research, shifting away from the current trend of individual research.

Formulating thematic research areas based on the need of the collage and the community

Creating conducive environment for the staff and students to do research

Creating partnership at a national as well as the international level in research areas for experience sharing to bring qualified and high standard research.

To make the collage to develop to the level of the higher academic institution by producing highly qualified researchers.

To develop evidence base curative, preventive and rehabilitative medical center.

To support the policy makers by creating evidence base policies,  procedures or documents.

To improve the academic carrier of the researcher to the higher levels.

Major activities of the Research   Directorate.

Managing  Research budget allocation

Looking for funds for research (national and international) and engage in management and allocation of the fund in the appropriate way being with the collage management.

Reviewing  and  evaluating  research proposal

Preparing annual plan for the collage researches Directorate.

Collaborating with the research units at the national and international levels

Preparing Training of staffs on different issues on research related issues.

Motivating the staff for research.
To work with the National institute of science and technology and FMHACA (Food Medicine and Health Administration Agency) for the ethically related issues that needs higher levels of ethical consideration.

Preparing Polices and procedure for the collage research activities  and providing Research ethical clearance based on procedures and policies prepared by the directorate.

Preparing special research award for high standard submitted proposals and for special groups of staff.

Working with the academic wing of the collage to enhance  research activities to be understood as the  compulsatory  ways for the academic rank.

Announces dates for submission of proposals for the undergraduate and postgraduate students and also for   staffs.

Prepare the collage journal to disseminate the outputs of the research

Preparing regular research conferences

Establishing research centers at the different areas of the country (can be done with the rural community attachment centers).

Other postgraduate and staff training support

Announcement of the research activities, policies, and procedures of the collage through the collage’s Website.

Detail/ Description

As a new College, the research office has given several trainings for academic staff on research methodology (through the collaboration with University of Ghana, University of Michigan, University of South Carolina, Addis Ababa University  and Jimma University).

The research office funded for 13 research proposals with two rounds in the year 2014 and  2015. From the first round of 5 research proposals funded in the year 2014, 3 have been published in international journals, with the rest currently waiting to hear responses from different journals.

Regarding research capacity building in collaboration with the Ethio Canada Maternal Child Neonatal Health Project research activities supports had been given to the midwives trainees and additionally  with the collaboration of this project with University of Alberta, so far training in micro research methodology has been provided for 30 faculty members, and qualified to get funds  for 5 proposals of about 2,000USD for each team. Another 30 faculty members will receive training and compete for funds in September.

The research office provided travel and accommodation funds for faculty to attend conferences and present papers as a motivation for high quality research.

The research office is in the process to grant for the Nurses Contest Awards with the objective  of engaging and motivating nurses in evidence-based practice and developing evidence-based curative, preventive and rehabilitative medical centers. For this reason SPHMMC has designed a means for nurses to propose their own research questions where they take the leading role in identifying the problem, proposing solutions and fixing the problem with management support.

Collaboration has recently begun in implementation research with international and national partners. Currently the research office has collaborations with University of Ghana, University of Michigan, University of  Alberta, University of South Carolina, AAU and Jima University.

In general, the level of motivation and skill in research involvement among departments is improving, and in the past few years faculty members have had their research published in both local and international journals and in the past one year 8 research has been published.

The  College is also one of the sites for international multicenter randomized controlled clinical trials and these  clinical trials, which are undergoing follow up by the Research Office and the clinic trails are

Tranexamic acid for the treatment of postpartum hemorrhage: an International randomized, double blind placebo controlled trial ;World Maternal Antifibrinolytic Trial. This project finished recently successfully.

Treatment of hepatitis B In resource limited settings – a pilot program in Ethiopia.

Currently the College plans on integrating outreach community services with research projects to provide more effective, efficient, integrated and high-impact interventions to the community. “To provide comprehensive and integrated services at the community level and to strengthen the research and project activities of SPHMMC by reorganizing and reinforcing the Research Directorate  “ and working toward the  College’s vision and mission that is to  provide quality and affordable curative, rehabilitative, preventive, and promotive healthcare services and train competent, compassionate and ethically  healthy professionals using integrated and quality medical education, and to perform need-based research.

The College aspires to move closer to some of the world-renowned universities who have achieved world class status through cutting-edge research. Research in this regard would seek to be:

Relevant to local needs and development, and create an impact as attested to by local end users

Synonymous with attracting high-caliber graduate students and research personnel coupled with quality innovations

Associated with contributions of its staff to local and international journals, books and other publications

Ways of handling  submitted   research proposals

Post graduate Students, staffs will submit their proposal to their respective departments and then after the departmental council approves the proposal will be submitted to  the research directorate.

C.      Funding and budget management

–          After all the proposal  evaluated and approved the directorate will approve the budget allocated to each project and pass to the necessary body of the collage (vice provost for academic and research and provost of the collage)  for further accomplishment to finance directorate of the collage.

–          Overall funds and budget allocation to the undergraduate students , postgraduate students and staff researchers will be done by the research  directorate and submitted to the vice provost for academic and research  or provost of the collage  for approval and to proceed to the finance directorate of the collage.

A.     Publication of researches

Publication unit will  be established  and  it will owns it own   wing under the research

directorate and all the necessary documents will be prepared in the future for publication.

B.     Document preparations

Polices, guidelines and Procedures and other important documents already prepared and

approved on the college Academic Commission (AC)  meeting and  it is on printing press

and all    these will be used as a working reference.

C.    Research committee (IRB ) ( Institutional Review Board)
